Once, the projects were a symbol of hope. FDR wanted them to be places for workers and immigrants, people he called "the deserving poor." Starting in the '70s, neglect turned public housing projects into ghettos of concentrated poverty and violent crime. Now, in the next public housing "experiment," Chicago is replacing the projects and moving residents to mixed-income neighborhoods. But there won't be room for everyone. And a new home may not mean an escape from poverty.

The Washington National Opera Orchestra and Chorus performs William Bolcom's setting of Arthur Miller's play. Arnold Weinstein and Miller provided the libretto for this work commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The two-act opera, set in Brooklyn, is a faithful adaptation of the play, with some new lyrics by Miller and a few new arias added.

This radio version of poet Diane Gilliam Fisher’s Kettle Bottom was produced by Kate Long. The program delivers highly personal glimpses into the realities of life in a 1920s Mingo County coal camp patrolled by armed company guards.  You’ll hear from children, miners, mothers, immigrants, sons of freed slaves -- all speaking from the perspective of the West Virginia Mine Wars.
